THE PARENT-CHILD HOME PROGRAM, NATIONAL CENTER:
The Parent-Child Home Program is an early literacy non profit organization that helps low-income and struggling families prepare their children to begin school the tools they need to become successful students. It was started in 1965 and its National Center was founded in 1982 to disseminate information about, promote replication of, and conduct research on the Program. The Center's staff works with community organizations, school districts, universities, and governmental entities around the country to replicate The Parent-Child Home Program and to ensure that these replications provide quality programming for at-risk toddlers and their families. There are now 145 program sites in the United States, and 10 sites in other countries. The Parent-Child Home Program's goal is to prepare parents to be their children's first and most important teachers, introduce families with 2- and 3-year-olds to the joy of reading and playing together and prepare children to enter school ready to learn. Twice weekly home visits are designed to stimulate the parent-child verbal interaction and educational play critical to early childhood brain development. Each week the Home Visitors brings a new book or toy that remains with the families permanently. For many of these families these are their first books and educational toys.
