PCHP NY Regional Coordinator Andre Eaton will be presenting a workshop at the GradNation Community Summit, Preparing Children For School Success through Parent Engagement at Home. The session will focus on how trained community-based early literacy specialists can model reading, play, and conversation activities for parents and children while providing educational resources, information, and support to enable parents to build engagement in their children’s education in the environment in which they are most comfortable, their homes. PCHP believes that it is critical to engage parents as the first and primary teachers of their children, and that providing them the knowledge, skills, and materials to support their children’s education is vital to ensuring their children’s successful progress to high school graduation. NYC GradNation Community Summit
Location: Citi ICG Conference Center 388 Greenwich Street Time: 8:00 AM – 5:00PM
Since its launch in 2010, the GradNation campaign has become a crucial part of raising national awareness of the high school dropout crisis and helping communities work together more effectively to prepare young people for success in college and career. With a goal of achieving a 90 percent graduation rate by 2020, the GradNation campaign is asking communities to accelerate their efforts to raise graduation rates. Through the summit, Zone 126 is raising awareness of communities in need in New York City, especially Astoria and Long Island City. Only 60.1% of Astoria and Long Island City high school students graduated during the 2013-2014 school year, compared 68.4% citywide and 80% nationally.
