The Parent-Child Home Program, which has its headquarters in Garden City, is a nationally replicated early literacy program that is closing the educational achievement gap by giving low-income parents the skills and tools, including books and educational toys that they need to prepare their preschoolers to be successful students. Targeting families challenged by poverty, isolation, language and literacy barriers, and limited educational opportunities, PCHP increases parent-child interaction, improves children’s performance on school readiness assessments, and lays the groundwork for subsequent school success.
Longitudinal research demonstrates that the Program is successfully bridging the achievement gap by preparing participants to enter school ready to learn and increasing their high school graduation rates by 30%, to the same level as their middle class peers. Through twice-weekly visits over a two-year period, trained home visitors model reading, play, conversation, and positive parent-child interaction with parents and their two and three year olds using books and educational toys that are gifts to the family, and are also often the first educational materials in their homes.
“As a long time admirer of Kate Middleton’s shoes, I’m delighted that L.K.Bennett is sponsoring this event to raise much needed funds for PCHP,” said Sarah Walzer the CEO of PCHP. British fashion house, L.K.Bennett, opened its sixth U.S. women’s concession shop at Bloomingdale’s in Roosevelt Field Mall in November of 2011. The models for the fashion show, who are PCHP supporters, will be wearing looks from L.K.Bennett’s Fall Winter 2012 collection.
Everyone is invited to participate in a night of fashion, fun, food and drinks, to raise funds that aid in preparing at-risk children for academic success and strengthening families through intensive home-visiting.
